Sheigra (Scotland) DXpedition Reports

10-23 January 1998

With Alan Pennington, Dave Kenny and Duncan Stanworth

Introduction

We were told we were mad to go to Sheigra in January (from a weather point of view) but apart from a Force 11 gale one night (which caused two of the four longwire beverage aerials to break from their termination stakes on the clifftops) and a blizzard that cut us off from the nearest village, Kinlochbervie, for two days, the weather was no worse than it has been in a typical October or November. In fact there were some quite mild and calm days in the two weeks we occupied the old crofters cottage in this far north west corner of the Scottish mainland.

The four beverage aerials radiating out from the cottage, supported on hundreds of 4-5ft bamboo canes, proved particularly robust. Apart from the two breaks during the ferocious gale on the night of Monday 12th, only one other break occurred - also at the termination point - due to corrosion in the wire caused by saltwater spray. The aerials survived the blizzard and subsequent iceing of Sunday 18th particularly well despite being enveloped in some huge snow drifts - not one cane or wire was damaged. The sheep seem used to the wires stretching across their hills by now, and only a few canes suffered from being convenient rubbing posts for woolly quadrupeds.

Reception conditions were interesting and varied with plenty to hear most days, particularly for Duncan and Alan whose first Sheigra DXpedition this was (see summary of reception conditions below). There were a couple of nice, albeit shortish, openings to the US/Canadian West Coast on the mornings of 19th and 22nd January, and a most unusual opening around 0000-0200 on 18th January when the band was full of signals from China, South Asia and the Far East (all rather difficult to ID, but see 1593 kHz which we concentrated on, being a particularly clear channel at that time!).

Other noteworthy loggings were the two new travel information stations at Dallas/Fort Worth airport, Texas, on 1640 and 1680 kHz in the extended AM band. There were both heard just after 0900 on 16/1 with amazing reception considering their output power is reported to be just 60 watts! One of the Californian extended band stations, KXBT on 1640 kHz, was heard with quite a fair signal around 0800 on 22/1. This station also proved to be a breath of fresh air, with a DJ playing records live from a cafe, a change from the diet of 'phone-ins, sports, religion and newstalk served up by many US AM stations these days. As usual, potential UK first and other noteworthy loggings are highlighted in bold.
